What am I thinking about?

Is it time to relegate TwitterX to the history books? If it’s not, it’s darn close. Regardless of where you fall in your thinking on this, there have been over 50 new platforms to hit the social media world since the ManChild bought TwitterX and making sense of them and which ones to use in the work we do is a tireless maze of time suck.

To try and help all of us Rosemari Ochoa and I are putting together a working group of folks to pool our resources of time and energy to test some of the more promising platforms in the next few months to allow all of us to spend our time and energy where it makes the most sense.

If you’d like to join us in this work, we will be convening the first call of the BBRO Working Group sometime in mid August to figure out how best to accomplish this and set some timelines for getting it done.

Trainings & Webinar Alerts

None to announce at this time but we expect to announce a few fall trainings in the next few weeks.

What am I reading?

So where are we all supposed to go now? – This one really resonated with me as I think about the role of social media in our work.

The solution to Twitter’s downfall isn’t five Twitter clones – After reading the last one, read this one too #SorryNotSorry

Dear Alt-Twitter Designers: It’s about the network! – This is the one that has saved me from trying to write my thoughts…we are returning to the network focus and nurturing existing networks on new platforms is the tl/dr version

New Tools of Interest

Theads: In case you were lucky enough to not have to log on in July at all…Threads has launched– Meta’s attempt to lure away TwitterX users. Eventually Threads will be connected to the Activity Pub protocol and thus part of the fediverse- when this happens you would be able to see Threads content in say Mastodon and vice versa.

Unified: Unified is a new social platform built specifically with advocacy in mind. Definitely worth checking it and has a ton of potential…in beta right now but use the link in this email to join the email list and get fast tracked off the waitlist 🙂

Platform Updates

Facebook

For our European readers: This is an important Meta ads change now being implemented

Instagram

This is a new Text block. Change the text.

TwitterX

TwitterX, when we sent out last month’s newsletter, had just announced it would rate limit how many tweets per day a user could read and also had made it so in order to read any tweets at all…to no one’s surprise, neither of these announcements holds true today

If you’ve been using Media Studio to manage your content you may have found your access was cut off…that’s because Media Studio is now exclusive to the Blue Check Mark

File this under too late? Blue Check Marks can now use a system called Twitter Delegate which functions like page admins to give people account access to post w/out giving them the account password

Threads

Adam Mosseri says that they won’t be doing anything to enourage news and politics as a conversation on Threads– imho if he thinks that they won’t be a part of the conversation anyway then he’s blind as a bat

The first of several features needed for long term success is now rolling out: Following feed

Other platforms

This really applies to all platforms and is relevant if you do any kind of work with influencers

Tiktok couldn’t resist getting in on the Twitter clone game- text posts are now a thing
