What am I reading?

The Case to Reform the Share Button, According to Facebook’s Own Research– Key takeaway: 38% of misinformation viewing happens on deep shares in FB, while pages reliably get 80% of their views at a share depth of 2 or shallower

We Read Twitter for Entertainment, Trust It for News (Unless We Vote Republican)– Good summary of the latest Pew Research study released about our consumption of news online

The Two Psychological Principles Tearing Democratic Digital Fundraising Apart– This article is about email practices but as often say in our trainings, these principles apply to our social media too

Platform Updates

Facebook

This is a BFD…ICYMI lots of the interest based ad targeting options we regularly use will be disappearing on January 19th. We have ads in the field testing some possible alternatives as I type (and we are doing that Ads training 1/18 & 19 where we will share the results)

Another big change in FB Ads- change to the definition of a social issue ad but don’t get too excited..unless you are doing an ad for a product or event your content likely still needs the disclaimer

Facebook Groups got a bunch of new tools

Ooo I wish FB was more like Nextdoor said no one ever but now it is

Keep an eye out for wider release of their new test which is giving users more control over what shows up in their newsfeed

Instagram

Twitter

Twitter Blue is now live in the US– stay tuned next newsletter for my review

Instagram links now show as preview cards on Twitter (again at long last again)

Image preview in tweet composer actually now shows what it will look like in people’s timelines

Oh look you can now add stickers etc to Twitter images

Reason 59872-97 that Twitter will never report reach to us: you can now listen to a Twitter Space without being logged into Twitter

Speaking of analytics…Twitter has rolled out a new analytics card

Other Platforms

TikTok has increased the caption character count to 300 characters

Not directly social media BUT the increased use of alias emails is already starting to affect the efficacy of custom audiences built out of our CRM lists so ymmv

Clubhouse has finally added live captions
