Political Social Grab Bag

What am I thinking about?

What can I say except Meta is a case study in “obeying in advance“.

Editorially, this is the stuff that nightmares are made of.

Realistically, the conversation about using or not using platforms has now circled back to Meta platforms. For some, not using them in the future will be the right choice. For some, continuing to use them is going to be the right choice.

Regardless, this newsletter has always been about sharing with you the features and algorithm changes, a few think pieces on the role of social media in the work we do and training opportunities and for now this newsletter will stay that way. If you want to talk thru the pros and cons of any of these platforms, help devising strategy for social media or digital in your organization or want training that isn’t being offered thru our public trainings drop us a line at training@beckerdigitalstrategies.com and let’s talk.

It’ll always be the Gulf of Mexico to me.

New Tools of Interest

Interestingly enough we now have 2 different apps aiming to be a substitute for Instagram, both a part of the Fediverse:

Pixelfed is built on the Active Pub protocol which is the same protocol as Mastodon

Flashes is build on the AT Protocol which is the same protocol as Bluesky

Platform Updates

Meta Platforms

It looks like the ongoing deprioritization of political content, in a case of be careful what we wish for, is going to cease so our collective reach should go back up BUT there will almost certainly be a correlating increase of trollish reactions to our content.

Turn this setting on ASAP: New moderation setting to auto hide comments made by pages pretending to be your page

The decoupling of Threads from Instagram continues as you are now able to independantly edit your profile pic, add a link to your profile and set a user name in Threads itself

Instagram profile grids are now rolling out to feature rectangular pictures instead of square

Threads is now rolling out Insights on mobile to everyone and they are also now rolling out the ability to schedule posts and image tagging just rolled out this week

Instagram has added more insights to Reels related metrics

Fediverse

Free our Feeds is a new effort to build an entire app ecosystem in top of Bluesky’s AT Protocol

Bluesky: Lots of new things on Bluesky including Trending Topics,

Bluesky: Psst tell a friend: dedicated vertical video feeds are now available on all social platforms including Bluesky

Winning the Internet

This was on my Facebook timeline the day before the temporary TikTok shut down…well played Meta

Image that shows a post from Facebook that says
