What am I reading?

Big Tech’s political ad bans are a big charade – From the no kidding, we could have told you this file…

The Internet Encyclopedia of Memes – Fun read of an interview with EoC of Know Your Meme

How the National Park Service Gets Their Captions So Good – Another great interview to read- this one with the Social Media Specialist of the National Park Service

YouTube Finds That Gen-Z Wants Personally Relevant Content More Than Viral Videos – So another example of rock meeting hard place…folks want personally relevant content but don’t want platforms to use data to figure out what that personally relevant content might be…

Platform Updates

Facebook

Potential new “Basic Ads” product from FB that’s less reliant on data…which really just means enabling of say it, spray it and pray- in other words skeptical cat is skeptical

Yet another potential move from Meta in reaction to pressures around data use and another dose of skepticism from where I sit- the potential change from data informed algorithm to an AI powered discovery engine more like Twitter’s current algorithm making messy inferences and judgements of what you SHOULD see instead of want to see based on past behavior <sigh>

Now rolling out: the ability to create Reels from existing videos in Creator Studio

You can now post ONLY to followers

It used to be that all the other Platforms wanted to be Facebook but now…

Twitter

At long last! Tweet segmenting!

As of Today, July 1, TweetDeck Mac app is gone…Tweet Deck on browsers still intact as of now

In Communities, tweets can now be pinned

On the Accessibility front this is huge news- audio charts (check out the demo in the thread)

Now in Beta: Notes (remember Facebook Notes? yeah same thing but on Twitter…)

Other Platforms

This is a social media newsletter so why am I including an article aboutFirefox? Well the new url parameter stripping is going to affect our ad actions attributions as well as action attribution to social media in general if you’ve been relying on the automatic FB parameter instead of creating your own source codes

TikTok- possible app store/playstore removal back in the news- keep an eye on this

Oh look more subscription social media…this time Snapchat gets in on the game with Snapchat+ and Telegram with Telegram Premium

Don’t Try This At Home

So many Juneteenth and Pride Fails it’s hard to pick the worst of the worst so I’m not linking to any of them or else that’s all this newsletter would be this month

Winning the Internet

Be glad you aren’t the SM manager for Sudocrem…but check out how other brands jumped in on the fun
