Political Social Grab Bag

What am I thinking about?

I was going to write about Clubhouse. Then I was going to write about the latest about politicxal content and the FB Newsfeed. Then Newspocalypse happened in Australia

The TL/DR of what happened: The Australian govt (at the not so secret urging of Murdoch) announced the impending passage and implementation of a law that would require digital platforms to pay news organizations for all news posted on their platforms. This was meant to apply to not just dedicated news sections but if someone, the new organization or anyone else, posted a link that lead to a news site.

I wrote more about it over on Medium and I would encourage you, even if you don’t read what I wrote, to start thinking about what you would do if something like that were to happen where you live and do your work

Look for more about the other two topics soon!

Trainings & Webinar Alerts

We are teaming up with the Center for Digital Strategy for a6 webinar series Building a Social Ambassador Program that will start Thurs 3/4. There are still a few seats left but once the series begins registration will be closed.

Applications are still being accepted for our July Digital Organizing Bootcamp and August Advanced Digital Organizing Bootcamp.

Stay tuned for announcements for some new 2 day trainings and we will be doing our Social Media Deep Dive again in Q2.

What am I reading?

Twitter’s Jack Dorsey wants to build an app store for social media algorithms–  So still an algorithmic feed but you as a user get to pick which algorithm to use. I’ve got a better idea. Give us back the reverse chronological order feed and make it easier to create lists!

Can Auditing Eliminate Bias from Algorithms– While this article isn’t specifically about social media algorithms the concept applies and is of interest given the things in the above article about Dorsey’s thinking re: an app store for algorithms

The Oversight Board Moment You Should’ve Been Waiting For: Facebook Responds to First Set of  Decisions–  Read this one and ask yourself: Is the OB going to recommend reinstituting Lord Tiny Hands on Facebook?

New Tools of Interest

Neon Tools – We often get asked about hashtag tracking and voila…best part- it’s free! (h/t Yussi Pick)

New platform alert! Dispo – think Polaroid for digital pics but iOS only (what’s with this no android app trend of late?)

Platform Updates

Facebook

Topic Exclusion controls have moved to ad account level (not sure why this link talks about it like it’s a new thing, it’s been around for quite a while!)

Of course Facebook is building an audio chat product to compete with Clubhouse and Spaces

Instagram

Twitter

Twitter removed its Ad Transparency Center

Twitter is moving into subscription based on content big time: Newsletters, Super Follows and they are thinking about making Tweetdeck a paid feature

Perfect…because DM Spam in text isn’t annoying enough now we’ll be able to get voice DMsspam as well

YouTube

Along with some other feature YT recently announced that Shorts (up to 60 sec videos in vertical format) will be coming to the US in the near future
